Advanced Knee Replacement & Resurfacing Options
If you are experiencing knee pain, early evaluation is important as a total knee may not be necessary. As our orthopedic knee surgery specialists at Medical City Hip & Knee Specialists evaluate your arthritis or other knee problems, we may find that the kneecap arthritis may be the source of the pain. When bone on bone arthritis is isolated to the kneecap joint, replacement of the kneecap joint only may be indicated. This allows only the kneecap joint to be resurfaced or replaced while the medial and lateral compartments of the knee remain as the natural joint. This procedure can be successful in providing freedom from pain.
In patellofemoral replacement, the worn surface of the kneecap (patella) is resurfaced with a plastic button. The groove for the patella that is on the thigh bone (femur) is also resurfaced to allow fluid, painless movement between these two elements with knee motion.
Benefits of a Patellofemoral Knee Replacement
- Faster Recovery When Compared to a Total Knee Replacement
- Natural Feel and Movement
- Greater Mobility
- Increased Quality of Life
- Protects Surrounding Bone and Tissue
In addition, this type of knee replacement assists patients who have suffered specific knee cap problems, including fractures and developmental disorders of the knee. By performing this procedure, most patients see a marked improvement in their day-to-day mobility and knee stability, and they often will not need to undergo a total knee replacement.
